aa batteries taped up, large batteries in clear sealed bags

Prior to storage or drop-off:

  • Cover both battery terminals with clear packing tape. The label must be visible.
  • Alternatively, you could place each rechargeable battery in a separate, sealed plastic bag. This is important because battery terminals that touch metal surfaces or other batteries can spark, causing a fire.
  • Do not store batteries for more than six months. Shorter storage times may be recommended by some manufacturers.

Drop them off:

  • More than 50 locations in Onondaga County accept small-format, rechargeable batteries from both residents and businesses for recycling at no charge. Check out this drop-off locator to find a spot near you.
  • OCRRA also accepts small-format, rechargeable batteries at battery kiosks as long as each battery is placed in an individual, sealed plastic bag or if the terminals have been sealed securely with clear packing tape. When using OCRRA battery kiosks, place small-format, rechargeable batteries in the slot labeled “rechargeable.”

The following locations ONLY accept household rechargeable batteries under 11 pounds, single-use lithium batteries and coin/button batteries. If you do not have one of those battery types, please follow the steps beginning here to determine drop-off options for your battery type. Please note: Alkaline batteries are no longer accepted at OCRRA drop-off locations. Visit our alkaline batteries section for guidance.
