#1 - Recycle
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles recommends the following: Do not return your old plates to the DMV unless you are required to return them. When you receive your new plates, you must destroy your old plates to protect against fraudulent use. Mark each plate with a permanent marker or cut each plate into pieces.
Then, they can go in the trash, where they will be recovered at the Waste-to-Energy Facility and recycled. License plates do NOT belong in your home recycling bin in Onondaga County.
