Industry standards have changed and material recycling facilities – the private companies that sort your recyclables – are now able to handle bottle, jug, jar and dairy tub lids in their operations. These caps can now go in the blue bin, providing they are attached to the bottles, jugs or jars. Loose caps end up as trash, even if you put them in your blue bin. But, if you make sure they stay on the container, you ensure they don’t fall through the cracks, so to speak. When the container and the cap are handled together, as one item, they both get recycled.
