When a battery is built directly into a device’s structure, not designed for easy removal, that is known as a battery-embedded device or BED. Some examples of BEDs, or items with a non-removable battery, include smart watches, earbuds, wireless headphones, smart speakers, video game controllers, smoke alarms, vapes and cell phones, as well as personal care items like electric toothbrushes and razors.

#1 - Recycle

Decorative

Battery-embedded devices (BEDs) NEVER belong in your home recycling bin or in OCRRA’s battery collection kiosks (where only loose, individual batteries can be dropped off). Do not attempt to remove a BED’s battery, as it can be dangerous.

Some items with BEDs may be dropped off at designated locations that can manage and prepare them for recycling. Check with the following locations in advance to find out if they will accept your specific item:

1-Bruin Recycling: (315) 410-0050

2-Staples: Contact information varies by location.

New York State also has an e-waste law that ensures certain electronics can be recycled at no cost. Some electronics are BEDs. Learn what items fall under the New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Law, then visit OCRRA’s Electronics Management page for additional recycling guidance for those items.

#2 - Reuse

If your item is in good working condition and suitable for continued use, consider donating it to a thrift store, such as:

1-Salvation Army: (315) 445-0520

2-Rescue Mission: (315) 453-7242.
