Donate old clothes/textiles!
Textiles such as clothing, linens, and blankets cannot go in the recycling bin as they wind around the sorting machinery and contaminate other recyclables. They should be brought to donation centers instead.
#1 - Recycle
Do NOT put fabric in a recycling bin. However, the Rescue Mission will take mismatched socks and items that are ripped, stained and missing buttons. They sell these items to companies that repurpose them into industrial wiping rags or insulation. Be sure to label bags of these clothing scraps as “rags” so they do not get mixed up with the wearable clothing that can be resold in stores.
#2 - Reuse
Donation centers usually accept clean and dry clothing, linens, drapes, towels, footwear, belts, hats, handbags, gloves and other accessories for reuse year-round. All items must be washed and dry.
For gently used blankets, towels and comforters, but NO sheets or pillows, call the CNY SPCA, (315) 454-4479 or Humane Association of CNY, (315) 457-8762 to find out if they are interested in your donation.
#3 - Dispose
If your textiles are wet, have an odor or are contaminated with grease or mildew, please place them in trash.
