Glucose monitors have two basic parts – a sensor and a receiver.
CGM Sensors:
The sensor is what attaches to the skin for reading glucose.
When generated in a household, these should be managed like needles, lancets and other sharps. Some manufacturers have takeback programs for these items (e.g., Abbott) If your manufacturer does not take them back, please follow OCRRA’s instructions for managing sharps.
CGM Receivers:
The receiver is what reads and displays the information gathered by the sensor. It contains a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
If you can remove the battery from the device, please do so and place the rechargeable battery in an OCRRA battery recycling kiosk or drop it off at a Call2Recycle receptacle.
Once the battery is removed, the remaining device can be dropped off for recycling at Battery World or Bruin Recycling OR it can be placed in the trash. Batteries MUST be removed! Rechargeable batteries cannot be placed in the trash per NYS law.
If the rechargeable battery cannot be removed from the receiver, residents may drop the entire device and rechargeable battery off at Battery World or Bruin Recycling so the battery and any recoverable device components can be recycled. Alternatively, Redwood Materials will accept any rechargeable device with a lithium-ion battery, via mail from residents.
